Berwyn Veterans Memorial Board

Julie Nixon Eisenhower, Honorary Chair
Curt Weldon, Honorary Chair

Bill DeHaven, Committee President, and his wife Pat - are life long residents of the community. They grew up here, met in grade school, married and raised four children in Berwyn . Bill is a Tredyffrin Township Supervisor, an office he has held since January, 2002. Prior to his election to the board, Bill served as a police officer in the township for almost 30 years. Pat works for a Pharmaceutical company. The veterans memorial has long been a dream for them. They appreciated that many people in their family and community were never shown any recognition for their service, sacrifices, and time spent away from loved ones in the service of their country. The memorial became a vehicle to honor those selfless and heroic deeds.

Jack Ansley - Born in 1946, John H. Ansley, Jr, known as Jack to friends and family, came to Berwyn in 1950. He joined his father in his photography business in 1972 after service in the 101st Airborne Division as a 1Lt in Vietnam and various postings around the country including the 10th Special Forces at Ft Devens, MA. The Ansley studio was established by John H. Ansley in 1945 after his service in the Marine Corps as an aviator during WWII. Father and son continue to work together. Jack is married to Mary Jane and they reside in Berwyn. They have three daughters, all married and living in Alaska, Indiana and Maryland.

Bill Bellew, Secretary, is a Vietnam veteran who served as a U.S. Army Combat Infantry officer during 1969. He is presently a Senior Vice President with Black Rock Capital , LLC. Bill and his wife Margaret have two grown sons (Bill and Kevin) and have lived in Berwyn for more than thirty years.

John Lamborn - Born in 1945, John grew up on Knox Avenue as a 5th generation Lamborn living in Berwyn. A sense of community must be in his genes – great grandfather Joshua was on the school board. Grandfather Theodore was postmaster and Secretary Treasurer of the Berwyn Building and Loan. Father Theodore was on the staff of the “Berwyn Post” newsletter sent to WWII soldiers. John served as a medic in Vietnam.

Ted (Theodore) Lamborn, It is with great sadness that we report the Ted’s death, December 7, 2004. Ted was a very dedicated and special member of our Board. He was also very committed to the community of Berwyn and to his Church. In particular, Ted volunteered much of his time to Pocono Plateau, a United Methodist Church camp. While serving in this capacity, he became a mentor to many young people. Ted is remembered for his quiet and gentle nature, a behind the scenes man, always there, always to be counted on, but never looking for recognition. We will miss Ted very much and extend our sympathies to his brothers Bob and John.

The Memorial Architects

Lyman Perry, is a distinguished USNA graduate and veteran of the Cuban Missle crisis and Vietnam. When asked by Bill DeHaven if he would help locate and design a flagpole and bench down the street he enthusiastically volunteered the design services of his firm to execute and assist in raising the funds needed to build a creative and unique memorial for the Veterans.

Mathew Moger, is a Principal with Lyman Perry Architects. He has taken on the challenge of architecting the Veterans Memorial to create something that is simultaneously reverential and celebratory to the Veterans and at the same time a centerpiece of the Townships and the Berwyn locale. Matthew received his Bachelors and Masters in Architecture from the University of Buffalo and is the driving and designing force of Moger-Perry Furniture.     Scott Sampson of Lyman Perry Architects, Ltd., as the youngest of the participating architects, has enjoyed working with people that have experienced our past wars and carry strongly felt perspectives that may differ from, but are not more deeply held than his own. Scott also appreciated the opportunity to work with stainless steel which he thinks may come to be thought of as a larger part of what the memorial symbolizes in the men and women it honors.
